Card Subtraction

With the new CCGPS students have more opportunity to explore and reinforce concepts with hands-on activities. Students in third grade must add and subtract fluently to/from 1,000. One such activity reinforces the concept of subtraction using playing cards. Students work in pairs and as they draw a card for the deck, they must keep a running subtraction total. Not only are the students reinforcing their math skills, but more importantly, they are talking to each other and sharing their methods and math vocabulary.
